Different types of insulation materials

3. Mineral wool
Mineral wool is a fibrous material that’s made from post-industrial recycled content. It’s formed by drawing or spinning molten material or rock materials. There are two main types of mineral wool – rock wool and slag wool. The former is a man-made material consisting of natural materials, including diabase and basalt. Slag wool is also a man-made material, yet it’s created from blast furnace slag. Slag is the waste matter that forms atop molten metal.
Mineral wool is considered loose-fill insulation. One benefit of this material is that it doesn’t require additional chemicals to make it fire-resistant.
4. Polyurethane
Polyurethane is a low-conductive insulation material, stemming from the fact it has gas in its cells. This thermoset foam insulation is available in both closed-cell and open-cell formulas. The former occurs when high-density cells are closed and filled with gas. This gas helps the foam insulation expand, thereby spilling the space around it. Alternatively, open-cell polyurethane is filled with air – giving the insulation a spongy texture.
Polyurethane is commonly available in liquid sprayed foam and can be made into laminated insulation panels.
